It is hard to find a great tutor. A person whom you invite into your home or meet at the library. They will be a role model, teacher, mentor, and motivator. They have background knowledge on the subject and curriculum your child needs. Someone dependable, who does not always cancel with no notice. Most amazing tutors eliminate risks that will harm their job and can help you find success for your child in school.

Here are some do’s and don’ts when looking for and finding a tutor:

1) Do use a good tutor. Why?

a) They must have academic ability.

b) They should have a thorough reference check.

c) They accept accountability and responsibility for the quality of service provided, very few are professionally insured.

d) Ensure that tutors are free of criminal records and are not on the sexual offenders registry (MAKE SURE YOU ask for a CRIMINAL POLICE CHECK which includes a VULNERABLE SECTOR SCREEN, they should be able to provide one!)

e) Talk to your child (make sure they feel comfortable), monitor the tutors, and do not use tutors who receive poor feedback on their reviews.

Go Tutor with Melissa does all of this with the added benefit that tutors know best practices, study skills and methods, and how to tutor students with learning difficulties such as ADHD, Asperger’s and Dyslexia.

2) Do not use a tutor that does not have good reviews on social media.

This seems obvious, but most people leave reviews for two reasons (a) extremely good service and (b) extremely bad service. Look for services with GOOD reviews. Tutors with no social media reviews and no transparency could cause trouble.

3) Do not choose the cheapest tutor and service.

a) The best tutors are normally fully booked. They will most likely have a waiting list.  Good tutors want better pay rates.

b) Tutoring services are very labour intensive if it is done right. Constantly monitoring the progress of the students, academic records, meetings with schools, parents and psychological services. Marketing a tutoring service is expensive.

c) Cheap tutors cannot offer the peace of mind you are looking for, and you will inevitably leave yourself open to risk and disappointment.
